A Grand Day Out……………………

In the words of Wallace and Grommit, the Macmillan Carnival Cup at Alders Farm Silver Fish Lake was indeed a “Grand Day Out”.

The aim of the day, was to have a fun day, while at the same time to bring an awareness and higher profile to the Macmillan Organisation supporting cancer care, and to contribute a donation to their worthy cause. (On that note thank you to our hosts at Alders Farm for their extra donation to the Macmillan charity).

The weather was superb and the 12 anglers on the day caught a hefty total bag of 405lbs 13oz of fish, which gave an average catch of over 33 lbs. Impressive…..Yes!

The day began with a healthy fat fighters delicious gannets English Breakfast from the hosts at Alders, whose courtesy extended to transportation of all the fishing tackle down to the Lake, via quad and trailer. Just as well after the breakfast!

The draw gave promise for all, which was rather confusing as every peg announced was branded as “The Peg”…….time would tell.

Initial tales around the bank indicated that Rod Chapman, one of the Milton Keynes Bandits, was catching large carp on the waggler, fishing up in the water. At this stage it looked as though it was going to be a one horse race, with him bagging 10 carp in the first 2 hours!

Meanwhile at the other end of the lake were Graham Barry, Steve Warner and Dick Clegg. The air was full of banter and SW was trying hard to impress the Yorkshire man for a place in the England Squad. His determination to impress might have worked, had he disclosed to Dick earlier that they were all competing for a fishing holiday prize in France. Once DC found out, he got his head down and started to catch steadily on the pole! SW continued to sun worship and eat cake and rolos, but his catch rate lessened. GB on the other hand had given up on his improvised method feeder, (having left the right ones at home!), and started on the pole and paste in the margin. The tide was turning for him too now and Graham was impressively catching quality fish in the last 2 hours. But the feeling was that Rod was now approaching a 100 lbs catch, so all were running for second place or a section.

Of the others, Stan Piecha had been quietly catching, and too Terry Lancaster, even though he had broken his pole, and somehow managed engineer a repair. DIY SOS worked.

After 5 hours of fishing, only the scales would tell the truth. Each competitor was challenged to guess their own weight first. Jeff Lewis must weigh each fish before putting them in the net, as his guess was astonishingly accurate. However, the big surprise was that, Rod Chapman, whose estimate was 90 lbs, only weighed in at 65 lbs14 oz. Those 6 lbs carp were either on slimfast or Rod needs another visit to SpecSavers!

It just goes to show that “It ain’t all over till the whistle blows”. GB and DC turned ashen when they heard the news of Rod’s weight. They were actually much closer to him than they had ever thought. Perhaps Rod knew all along, but wanted to psychologically damage the competitors with the rumour of how much he had caught?? If this was the case, it worked, as Dick turned out an impressive 2nd place bag of 55 lbs 13 oz, only 10 lbs behind the winner. Who knows what he might have had, had Steve Warner mentioned the holiday earlier? GB too with his late margin fish, had a credible section place with 51 lbs 15 oz, but had spent far too long by his own admission on the feeder. Ooops!

Car mate Stan Piecha, could not believe that GB had not caught the maximum available from his peg, after all Stan had, with his impressive 4th weight of 39 lbs 2 oz of smaller fish. Still at least between them, they now had won enough money to go home and reconnect the gas and electric! And they had been fed for another day.

Must not mention that Mike Kelly, packed up half an hour early, having started to decorate one of the Alders Farm trees with Christmas Method Feeders! Lol!

After the Match, the presentation was made, with Rod Chapman receiving the Trophy from Beryl Kelly, wife of match organiser Mike Kelly. Rod also received a cash prize and a holiday for 4 people at Kingfisher Lake in the Dordogne, France.

Thanks and praise indeed to the hosts at Alders Farm, and match organiser Mike Kelly.

Will this event happen again next year? ….You bet, and we are already looking forward to another “Grand Day Out”.
